MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II
TO JAVIER PÉREZ DE CUELLAR,
SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS*

To His Excellency Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar

At this decisive moment when humanity is looking with anxiety towards the Persian Gulf and cannot resign itself to war, my thoughts are with you as Your Excellency is preparing to go on a good-will mission to Baghdad. I cordially invoke the blessings of the God of Peace upon you; may He guide you and make your efforts find a favourable response.

I ardently hope that the moral authority of the Organization which you represent may make its contribution so that ultimately dialogue, reason and law may prevail and thus choices with disastrous, unforeseeable consequences may be avoided. May the supreme good of peace triumph, that peace which is so greatly desired by all the peoples of the earth!

From the Vatican, 11 January 1991.

IOANNES PAULUS PP. II
