1. Cari giovani partecipanti al Congresso Universitario Internazionale UNIV 2000, vi saluto tutti con affetto.

Benvenuti a quest'incontro, che anche quest'anno si svolge in prossimità delle feste di Pasqua. Il mio saluto, in questa Settimana Santa dell'Anno Giubilare, riveste un significato particolare: è un invito cordiale a lasciarvi conquistare sempre più totalmente da Cristo, Redentore dell'uomo. E questo invito, attraverso di voi, vorrei far giungere ai giovani del mondo intero. Siate profondamente persuasi che la società ha bisogno di trovare, nella vostra coerente testimonianza di giovani cristiani, uno stimolo importante per un saldo rinnovamento spirituale e sociale.

2. The theme of the Congress invites you to become more clearly aware of your mission as believers at the dawn of the third millennium. It is strikingly put: The image of man two thousand years later. You are invited, as it were, to weigh up two thousand years of history. In fact, the central event of human history, the coming of Christ on earth, divides the course of history in two: before and after Christ. For the Christian, however, the centrality of Jesus is not just a question of measuring the passage of time. The Word made flesh is the true protagonist of history, and the redemption, always at work in the often intricate flux of human events, is history’s ultimate hermeneutical key.

We could say that the two thousand years just ended are not just two millennia after Christ, but in a more real sense two millennia of Christ. This is the truth expressed in the theme of the Great Jubilee: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever!" (Heb 13:8). Despite human experience, often made up of failure, war, violence and injustice, Christ has conquered evil once and for all, nailing to the Cross the sentence of our condemnation (cf. Col 2:14). As the Apostle Peter writes: "By his wounds we have been healed" (1 Pt 2:25). This is why every moment of time belongs completely to him.

The Holy Year which we are celebrating underlines in a special way the fact that Christ is the centre and the meaning of all that happens, even when, humanly speaking, events seem to elude the rule of his providence. He himself has promised: "I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Mt 28:20). Knowing this, we are encouraged to act always with great confidence, because it is Christ who is at work in us, and because we recognize that in him God is bringing to completion his eternal plan of salvation (cf. Eph 3:11).

3. El "hecho" de la Redención, queridos jóvenes, abre de par en par ante nosotros, en nuestro compromiso cotidiano, un horizonte lleno de perspectivas: incluso en las contradicciones que a menudo experimentamos en el presente, sabemos que avanzamos constantemente hacia una meta segura. El verdadero progreso tiende hacia Cristo, hacia aquella plena unión con Él, la santidad, que es también perfección humana. Bien lo evidencia san Pablo en la Carta a los Efesios, donde escribe que el Señor ha establecido todo "para la edificación del Cuerpo de Cristo, hasta que lleguemos todos ... al estado de hombre perfecto, a la madurez de la plenitud de Cristo" (Ef 4, 13). De este modo los creyentes leen e interpretan la historia: es historia de Cristo y nosotros vivimos con Él, inmersos en Él y avanzando hacia Él. Escribe el Beato Josemaría Escrivá: "En el orden religioso, el hombre continúa siendo hombre y Dios continúa siendo Dios. En este campo el vértice del progreso ya ha sido alcanzado: es Cristo, alfa y omega, principio y fin" (Es Cristo que pasa, 104).

Queridos jóvenes del UNIV, sacad de esta conciencia una firme confianza: el esfuerzo del cristiano no es nunca en vano. El cristiano no obra nunca solo. (No lo olvidéis! Cada creyente es un instrumento de Dios y con él actúa Cristo mediante la fuerza del Espíritu Santo. Dejad que Dios actúe en vosotros y por medio vuestro. Y para que esto tenga lugar, sabéis bien a que medios hay que recurrir: se trata de los sacramentos, la oración, la práctica de las virtudes, la santificación del trabajo, así como la dirección espiritual.

Tenéis necesidad de Cristo, pero también Cristo tiene necesidad de vosotros para que lo deis a conocer a vuestros coetáneos, con los cuales compartís experiencias y esperanzas. La Iglesia os confía la misión de llevarles la luz de la verdad de Cristo y su anuncio universal de la salvación. Estad siempre dispuestos a pensar en los otros, olvidándoos de vosotros mismos para acercar a los hermanos a Dios. De ese modo podréis contribuir en la construcción de un mundo mejor y más solidario, porque la conversión y el compromiso de uno son un germen de salvación para todos.

4. Vi affido, carissimi giovani, insieme con il vostro quotidiano impegno, a Maria, Regina degli Apostoli. Invocatela spesso e imitatene le virtù. Lei vi aiuterà a conoscere più intimamente Gesù ed a seguirlo con crescente fedeltà e gioia.

Formulo di cuore a voi ed alle persone a voi care fervidi auguri per la Santa Pasqua e, mentre per ciascuno assicuro il mio ricordo nella preghiera, di cuore vi benedico.
