IVORY COAST
Results after the first year

Despite some initial delays, due to the many material difficulties common to all the Churches in Africa, Ivory Coast is now also moving rapidly along the path of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. A detailed document by Monsignor Joseph Teky, national representative for the Holy Year, outlines the partial results of the first year of preparation.

After a first phase of sensitisation, with letters, pastoral visits and special liturgical celebrations, the launch phase was accompanied by the start of a "Pilgrimage of the Cross" of the Jubilee in parishes and by a more careful formation of presbyteries and faithful. The Pope’s letter also inspired other initiatives: pilgrimages of young people and adults, prayer meetings, ecumenical assemblies, baptism celebrations. Not only in cities, but also in villages, translating aids for catechesis (dedicated, as is known, for the first year, to Jesus) into the local language.

Among the main instruments for the preparation of the Jubilee, there are three booklets on faith, the baptism and Christ, for the grass-roots ecclesial communities; a pastoral letter on Christ of the diocese of Saint Pedro, various catechesis and some posters tied to the "strong moments" of the first year.
