LACROIX  Card. Gérald Cyprien

 

Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, from the Pius X Secular Institute, metropolitan archbishop of Quebec (Canada), was born on 27 July 1957 in Saint-Hilaire de Dorset in the archdiocese of Quebec, and completed his secondary and higher studies at Trinity High School and Saint-Anselme College in Manchester, New Hampshire. He later pursued his theological formation at the University of Laval, obtaining a B.A in theology and a "maîtrise ès art". In 1975 he entered the Institut Séculier Pie X, taking his perpetual vows in 1982.

In 1982, he became secretary general of the Institute and in 1985, director of the General Council. From 1985 to 1987, he served as general manager of the Maison du Renouveau, a centre for Christian and spiritual formation within the aforementioned secular institute.

He was ordained a priest on 8 October 1988 in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-la- Recouvrance.

From 1990 to 2000, he undertook a mission in Colombia, where he opened new homes for the Pius X Secular Institute. From 2001 to 2004, he served as director general of the Institute; his mandate was renewed for a further five years in 2005.

He was appointed as titular bishop of Ilta and auxiliary of Quebec on 7 April 2009 and received Episcopal ordination on 24 May of the same year.

On 22 February 2011 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as metropolitan archbishop of Quebec.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Pope Francis in the consistory of 22 February 2014, of the Title of San Giuseppe allÂ’Aurelio.
