The Library at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music is structured to cater for the needs of didactic liturgical activities as well as for research within the Institute.

The initial nucleus of the collection has been constantly increasing during the years in such a way as to satisfy the internal educational needs as well as the requirements of a group of external scholars who refer to PIMS for their research work in the musical, liturgical, historical and musicological fields.
The Library conserves and places at the disposition of users various types of documents: books, records and CDs, photographic reproduction of original manuscripts and audiovisual material.
In view of the teaching mission of the Institute, a good part of the Library contains texts that are useful for study, preparation of thesis and musical practice as requested by the Programme of Studies.
The disciplines mainly catered for - in accordance with the courses of PIMS - are Gregorian Chant, Liturgical Music, Choral Music, Composition of Sacred Music, Liturgy, Musicology and Church History.

Last year the service rendered by the Library was largely extended. The reading room was reorganized: it now occupies the spacious areas previously used by the Commission for the New Vulgate. Current publications, reviews and journals on sacred music are kept up-to-date at the disposition of the users.
The library Catalogue System has been computerized: An internal network of personal computers has been installed making it possible to refer to bibliographic data from the original location to the reading room.
