 VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS

 PONTIFICAL CO UNCIL COR UNUM

Last June in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara (Mexico), Spiritual Exercises were held for those engaged in the Church's misson of diakonia. The gathering - the first experience of its kind - was an initiative of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the Dicastery of the Holy See responsible for organisms of Charity, and was directed by Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap., Preacher of the Pontifical Household.

To mark this important event, the Pontifical Council Cor Unum has published a booklet, prsenting some of the moments of these Exercises, including the letter sent from the Holy Father to the participants, the greeting of Cardinal Cordes, feedback of those present, and one of the catecheses given by Father Cantalamessa. The publication is intended to be a reminder of the experience, which emphasized the primacy of faith for those who work in charitable organisations and the importance for local Churches to nurture that Christian sprit without which charitable work becomes simply philantropic activity.

This year, Spiritual Exercises are being planned for the Continent of Asia. They will be held in the Archdiocese of Taipei (Taiwan) from 6-11 September, led by Sister Nirmala Joshi, successor fo Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Some 300 participants are expected from the diocesan and national Caritas, as well as other charitable organisations of the Catholic Church.
