PRESS RELEASE OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL COR UNUM: THE HOLY FATHER’S AID TO THE PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES AFFECTED BY FLOODS OF TYPHOON HAIYAN
(November 11, 2013)



As a result of Typhoon Haiyan, which in the course of the weekend has hit with extraordinary fury the territory of the Philippines, particularly the islands of Leyte and Samar, causing – according to data established at the time but not yet conclusive – more than 10,000 victims, the Holy Father Pope Francis through the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, has decided to send an initial contribution of $150,000 dollars as aid to the population.

This sum will be distributed through the local Church in the regions most affected by the disaster and will be used to support aid work of assistance carried out in favor of the people displaced and affected by the flood. It is intended to be a first and immediate concrete expression of the Supreme Pontiff’s spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement towards the people and the territories devastated by the floods.
