Jolana Poliáková, The Possibilities of Transcendence. Human Destructiveness and the Universality of Constructive Relations, translated from Czech by Jan Valeška. Lewiston/Queenston/Lampeter, The Edwin Mellen Press, 1995, x + 91 p.

This book, by a Czech philosopher gradually becoming known also in the English-speaking world, demonstrates a very resilient and positive view of humanity, which is the more credible in view of the author's experience in Prague in the early 1980s. She was expelled from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, until 1990. She writes in this volume of "extreme situations", contrasting an external, symptom-treating approach to life's difficult experiences with an inner strength, described (deliberately) in terms borrowed from the classics of Catholic spirituality. The current crisis in society comes from a hypertrophy of an external, material approach, at the same time as an atrophy of life-giving inner spiritual understanding. An openness to meaning allows us to rise above the necessarily limited horizon built into a world-view dominated by immediate problems, and also to share this remarkable inner strength with others: here is a psychology of martyrdom, but one which can be respected because of the quality of the experience behind the writing. Other sections in this small but impressive book cover love, faith, grace and freedom. It is a shame such an enlightening and impressive book is marred by an English translation which is not at all good, and makes some of Poliáková's ideas far more obscure than they need to be.
