A wealth of ideas and approaches to problems of cultural development, cultural change and communication. Father Bernard Ardura, new Secretary – but then still under-Secretary – of the Pontifical Council for Culture, took part in this Conference where he presented his paper: "Les mutations culturelles. Chances et défis pour l'Europe". According to Fr. Ardura, "le terme "culture" a connu, au cours du XXe siècle, une lente mais profonde évolution... La culture se révèle comme une dimension essentielle de la personne humaine, et l'Eglise perçoit les enjeux sous-jacents des courants culturels en mutation. Aussi, non seulement s'intéresse-t-elle à la culture, mais la considère-t-elle comme l'un des défis majeurs à relever, à quelques années de l'an 2.000".

Cette publication précieuse nous offre un panorama de la FIUC: sens et nature de cette organisation, son nom; les trois périodes de son histoire: 1924-1938, 1948-1963, 1963-1994. Structure, principaux documents, membres, responsables, réalisations et services. Le chapitre V est consacré à "l'Eglise catholique et l'Éducation supérieure": le Saint-Siège et les universités, le Vatican et la FIUC. Des annexes complètent ce volume en nous présentant des données statistiques relatives à l'organisation et à l'activité de la Fédération au long de son histoire: liste de toutes les institutions membres de la FIUC entre 1924 et 1994, les assemblées générales, les statuts et enfin les bibliographies: la documentation relative à la FIUC et, entre autres, une sélection de documents émanant du Saint-Siège et concernant l'éducation supérieure.

Neglected Wells. Spirituality and the Arts, edited by Anne M. Murphy and Eoin G. Cassidy. Dublin, Four Courts Press, 1997, 140 p.

This volume of talks on spirituality and the arts is a compilation of the series of lectures given in the Mater Dei institute in Dublin in 1995. It is introduced by Sister Anne Murphy, who is convinced that "the dialogue between faith and art is no new concept", and that "human creativity is a reflection of divine creativity..., a statement of hope and a statement of belief that life is meaningful". The crisis of meaning in this century has provoked a search for spirituality, and music and great art are providing some responses. And "anyone who has ever been moved by picture, poem or symphony will understand that such an epiphany of hope and meaning... is a theophany transcending considerations of formal faith or culture". "The potential superficiality of contemporary living poses a particular challenge to the Christian".

Father Eoin Cassidy speaks of beauty as a way to God, revisiting various philosophical conceptions of aesthetics and art to help in understanding the question of the objectivity of beauty. The question Why? is one way out of an impasse: "why is there beauty rather than banality, or why is there artistic creation rather than mere technological efficiency?" Perhaps ultimately art is a wager on transcendence or an expression of the desire for immortality.

Ireland is known as the "land of saints and scholars", a theme taken up by Michael Maher on the love of learning in the early Irish Church, which helped a people illiterate in the fifth century produce quality Latin and Irish texts within 100 years. Irish faith and culture owe so much to the monks and the learned folk who enriched their land so much.

Una Agnew explores the spirituality in the poetry of Patrick Kavanaugh, and Margaret Kelleher homes in on the strong spiritual strain in the writings (in English and Irish) of women like Eavan Boland, Alice Walker, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Paula Meehan and Toni Morrison.

After a technical piece by Anne Murphy on Fauré's Requiem as a musical theophany, Eileen Kane and Gesa Thiessen offer pieces on the sacred in the visual arts, ranging from a comparison of the differing views of Saint Bernard and Abbot Suger to a discussion of F. E. McWilliam's sculpture Princess Macha.

"The richer and more abundant life we crave is prefigured in works of art". This sentence ends the final contribution, by John Devitt, who reflects on the spiritual dimension of some contemporary Irish authors. He bemoans the fact that the "pure poetry" of some of the Church's teachings – the Resurrection of the Body, the Communion of the Saints, the Assumption and so on – are "not the doctrines on which homilists choose to enlighten us these days" in what he sees as an age of very flat liturgical celebrations. But perhaps the most hard-hitting part of his talk is about Michael Longley's adaptations of Homer, particularly the incident he entitled "Ceasefire" – which speaks for itself.
