NOTITIAE
Woodward, in the ÂÂReligionÂÂ section, on the new non-western face of Christianity. The year 2001 was not only the year in which the huge Muslim presence throughout the world first struck many in the American continent, but also a time when Christians recognised for the first time that Europe was no longer the centre of their world. In 1900, 80% of Christians were European and North American. By the year 2000, 60% of Christians were from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Striking changes. South Korea has four times as many Presbyterians as the United States, and in 2001 it became the second Asian country with a Christian majority. The 438,000 North American converts to the Assemblies of God in the last 10 years pale into insignificance beside 7 million in Africa. But growth in numbers in the developing world mirrors alarming rates of shrinkage in Europe and North America. One in six priests in United States Catholic parishes in the year 2000 is from another country. ÂÂIn short, the map of world Christianity has been redrawnÂÂ
. The face of Christianity has also changed ÂÂ it is no longer the white manÂÂs religionÂÂ and ÂÂareas that were once considered Christian homelands have become the mission territories of the new millennium. Evangelists from Latin America, Asia and Africa now hold crusades in cities such as London and BerlinÂÂ. In India, Christianity offers the outcasts hope and dignity denied them by the caste system. Christianity answers problems of meaning Maoist Marxism could not address, giving it a strong appeal in China. Christianity has blossomed in Africa since the demise of colonialism. Problems. The Anglican Communion has been shaken by a serious rift between liberal Europeans and Americans, on the one hand, and more conservative Africans and Asians, ÂÂover issues that included the ordination of women and homosexuals and the blessing of same-sex marriagesÂÂ. Evangelical and Pentecostal protestant efforts have dented the massive Catholic presence in Latin America. Unity is a problem, with 33,800 different Christian denominations recognised in the World Christian Encyclopedia. Those growing fastest have no ties with Catholicism or mainline protestant groups. Inculturation. Christianity has always sought ÂÂto plant the gospel at the centre of whatever alien culture its missionaries could penetrate. In the process the gospel has been not only transplanted but also repeatedly reinterpreted according to the previously existing religious understandingsÂÂ. In Brazil and other parts of Latin America, customs imported from Africa or ancient native religions have never really gone away, and exist side-by-side with standard Christian piety. Many Chinese Christians still include veneration of their ancestors in their worship. For many in India, the cross of Jesus wipes out the ÂÂbad karmaÂÂ due to their sin in this and earlier lives. African Christians often still observe the rituals of tribal religions. Global diversity. ÂÂChristianity for the first time in its history is truly a global religion ÂÂ but it is also becoming increasingly diverseÂÂ. A major difficulty is now being able to recognise ÂÂwhich elements of Western thought and culture are essential to the faithÂÂ. In other words, how far can Christianity bend in embracing non-western world views ÂÂwithout compromising its own traditional doctrines about the nature of God and the uniqueness of Jesus Christ as SaviourÂÂ? CONGRESS OF CATHOLIC CULTURAL CENTRES IN INDIA The Diocesan Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Centre, Thrissur, Kerala, India, hosted a Meeting of all the Catholic Cultural Centres in the country on 5th February, 2003, in the course of which a paper entitled The Mission of Catholic Cultural Centres in India was presented. In his Message to the Participants, His Eminence Paul Cardinal Poupard, President, Pontifical Council for Culture, stated: «The networking between the various Catholic Cultural Centres in India is both necessary and urgent so that they all have a common thrust by retaining as their primary goal the evangelisation of the millennial cultures of which India can be legitimately proud, and the inculturation of the faith, the seed of which has been sown in Indian soil since apostolic times». The Congress, the first of its kind, was the initiative of Rev. Fr. George Pallackapilly SDB, Secretary, Commission of Education and Culture of the Catholic BishopsÂÂ Conference of India and Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Culture. FAITH TOUCHING BODY AND SPIRIT IN CONTEMPORARY NORTH AMERICAN CULTURE The Fall 2001 edition of The Living Light, the journal of the Department of Education of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, contains articles clustered around the conviction that ÂÂcatechesis must address all forms of intelligence if it is to cultivate growth in faith and knowledge, service and spiritualityÂÂ
. In short, catechesis must minister to body and spirit togetherÂÂ (editorÂÂs foreword, p. 5). Lucien Richard o.m.i., professor of theology at Boston University, offers a reflection called ÂÂThe Body KnowsÂÂ, which denies that there can be any ÂÂseparation of flesh and spirit, of the material and spiritual worldsÂÂ in a Christianity faithful to the incarnation of the Word of God. The body must not be ÂÂabnegatedÂÂ in favour of the soul, or vice versa; ÂÂeach has its proper realityÂÂ
only in and through the otherÂÂ. The body is the source of our emotions, which are the link between the exterior and interior aspects of our selves. Religious experience is often to be located in this link ÂÂ in our struggle to reconcile thoughts with feelings, faith with reason and so on. These tensions should not be hidden; on the contrary, they are a sign of health that needs to be recognised and explored to promote integrated growth. Our bodies are our vehicle of communication; through our words we create a cultural world. ÂÂReligious education presents the Christian faith in a Christian language and therefore communicates a culture, a Christian culture, in which this language can be understood and experienced. The ultimate goal of catechesis is the catechumenÂÂs full participation in the culture of ChristianityÂÂ. Christianity offers salvation of the body, not from it. Christians should not flee from the world but with it, towards the future transformation of the world in God. This has various consequences for sacramental theology, and underlines the centrality of hospitality in Christian life. Understood correctly, ÂÂanthropology is theologyÂÂ. Sister Catherine Dooley o.p. works in the Department of Religion and Religious Education at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. In ÂÂGive Imagination a Chance!ÂÂ she explores the value of storytelling, not as the transfer of information but as a way of exciting the imagination and disclosing the realm of the possible. While many complain of how little children are taught about the faith, she asks whether the problem is really to work out how they can most effectively be taught. She suggests nurturing the imagination would work well not only for children, but also for young people and adults. Some Scriptural stories work in much the same ways as non-religious triggers for the creative imagination, a process that moves from surprise to insight and on to decision. Mature belief never leaves the biblical stories behind, but understands what first triggered off the imagination. Julie Collins is a teacher and spiritual director in Bethesda MD. Her contribution is entitled ÂÂTeaching Chastity: Mission Impossible?ÂÂ School chaplains may feel overwhelmed in discussions on this subject by ÂÂa whirlwind of ÂÂfeel-goodÂÂ relativismÂÂ, but young people cannot be blamed for this situation. ÂÂThey simply reflect the moral world created by their elders ÂÂ a world inhabited by MTV, Cosmopolitan magazine, and the TV show Temptation IslandÂÂ. In this world, a decision for chastity seems like madness, since ÂÂour culture seems to have lost any sense that when we say ÂÂnoÂÂ to our sexual urges, we are saying ÂÂyesÂÂ to something far richerÂÂ. The temptation is either to ignore the subject or to proclaim the official teaching stridently. Collins urges calm detachment when oneÂÂs efforts to give a positive message about sexuality are not received. Her recipe is perspective, humour and a great deal of faith. The best approach she has found is to begin by asking people to talk about their love life (rather than instantly offering moral advice). She is aware that students are always aware of her moral concern even when it is unspoken, but her tactic is to ask questions about values discernible in popular culture: generally, the only moral issue ever raised ÂÂ in films, for instance ÂÂ is consent. Having established that this is not enough, one can move on to the difference between sexual activity as ÂÂfunÂÂ and as an expression of love. A teacher who can help students reflect on the mystery of love has ÂÂa context in which Judeo-Christian sexual ethics make senseÂÂ. The article discusses advice in cases of disillusionment in this area, and helping young people learn to see virginity in a more profound sense as ÂÂreverenceÂÂ. Father John C. Cusick, who runs the outreach programme for young adults in the archdiocese of Chicago, raises an urgent challenge in his ÂÂBridging the Generational DivideÂÂ. His starting point is the admission that young adults in the United States are ÂÂhungry for the LordÂÂ but ÂÂabsent from our pewsÂÂ. Groups once run by young people are now peopled by rather elderly folk, and consequently many Church structures are struggling. He asks people to recognise that things are changing amazingly quickly, above all in peopleÂÂs perspective on life. He quotes some harrowing statistics for the current generation of young adults: a third of pregnancies have been terminated; divorce, murder, suicide and incarceration affect them more than any other age group. And yet there are signs of genuine spiritual longings. ÂÂWe have the food for the hunger they claim to have, but they do not feel they can be fed by usÂÂ. A key institution being challenged by the realities of contemporary life is the parish, which is all about stability, while many young people are forced into semi-perpetual mobility. Many claim to be Catholics but do not practise their faith in any recognised sense. CusickÂÂs question is how to encourage them to make the move from passive to active belonging. His ÂÂeight ministerial strategiesÂÂ are familiar enough to many priests, but not yet familiar to enough of them. He yearns for a Church with new missionary zeal, one with ÂÂa preferential option for the young adultsÂÂ; a ÂÂCatholic revivalÂÂ is needed, but it will never come about as the result of a programme or lecture series. What lights the fire is people who preach Christ. This issue of The Living Light also contains articles on sacramental catechesis in Christian communities and Christianity seen in Jewish terms, as well as sections devoted to book reviews and news items.
