Statement by Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, on the situation of migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons in Lebanon 

During these difficult days, especially for Lebanon, I would like to add my voice to all those who have been asking for an immediate cessation of the hostilities. Moreover, the humanitarian community should get access to the suffering civilian population who is forced to flee. The hundreds of thousands of displaced persons need our urgent attention. Humanitarian corridors should be put in place so that efficient and concrete assistance will be given. 

As Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, I would especially draw attention to the fate of the thousands of migrant workers who got trapped in the conflict, expressing our special concern for those who are from Asian or African countries, who are more abandoned. May the international institutions come to their assistance and evacuate them to safer places and/or assist them to return home. 

In addition, 22,000 persons (Sudanese and Iraqis) who received asylum in Lebanon are facing the consequences of the hostilities, with special difficulties. 

It would be of assistance to all of them if the entry procedures at the Lebanese-Syrian border would be facilitated and if the Government of Syria would allow them (Lebanese, migrants and recognized refugees) to enter temporarily and grant them protection during this time of violence. 

We hope that todayÂÂ’s meeting in Rome addresses the different aspects of the Middle East crisis and will lead to an end of violence, the adequate support of the civilian population and the beginning of long-term global solutions, for peace and security of all in the region.

Dichiarazione dellÂÂ’Ecc.mo Arcivescovo Agostino Marchetto, Segretario del Pontificio Consiglio della Pastorale per i Migranti e gli Itineranti, su migranti, rifugiati e profughi in Libano 

Durante questi difficili giorni, specialmente per il Libano, desidero aggiungere la mia voce a quella di coloro che hanno chiesto un fine immediato delle ostilità. Inoltre le Istituzioni umanitarie dovrebbero ottenere accesso alla popolazione civile sofferente o fuggitiva. Le centinaia di migliaia di sfollati hanno bisogno, infatti, di una attenzione sollecita. Corridoi umanitari dovranno essere quindi aperti, affinché possa prestarsi una concreta ed efficiente assistenza.

Come Segretario del Pontificio Consiglio della Pastorale per i Migranti e gli Itineranti, desidero attirare in modo particolare lÂÂ’attenzione sul fatto che migliaia di lavoratori migranti sono rimasti intrappolati nel conflitto, con speciale nostra preoccupazione per quelli che provengono da Paesi dellÂÂ’Asia e dellÂÂ’Africa, e sono più abbandonati. Possano le istanze internazionali proprie accorrere in loro aiuto ed evacuarli verso posti più sicuri e/o assisterli al fine di un sicuro ritorno a casa.

Inoltre circa 22.000 persone (Sudanesi e Iracheni), che hanno ricevuto asilo in Libano, stanno affrontando con particolare difficoltà le conseguenze delle ostilità. Sarebbe di grande aiuto per tutti loro se si decidessero procedure di ingresso in Siria facilitate e se il Governo siriano permettesse ad essi (Libanesi, migranti e rifugiati riconosciuti) di entrare temporaneamente nel Paese, garantendosi protezione durante questo tempo di violenza.

Auspichiamo che lÂÂ’odierno incontro a Roma affronti i vari aspetti della crisi mediorientale e conduca alla fine delle violenze, a un adeguato aiuto alla popolazione civile e allÂÂ’inizio di soluzioni globali, a lungo termine, per la pace e la sicurezza di tutta la regione.

DECLARATION DU SECRETAIRE DU CONSEIL PONTIFICAL POUR LA PASTORALE DES MIGRANTS ET DES PERSONNES EN DEPLACEMENT SUR LES MIGRANTS, LES REFUGIES ET PERSONNES DEPLACEES AU LIBAN

Au cours de ces jours difficiles, en particulier pour le Liban, je désire ajouter ma voix à celle de tous ceux qui ont demandé la fin immédiate des hostilités. En outre, les Institutions humanitaires devraient avoir accès aux populations civiles qui souffrent ou qui fuient. Les centaines de milliers de personnes déplacées ont en effet besoin dÂÂ’une sollicitude immédiate. Des couloirs humanitaires devraient donc être ouverts afin que lÂÂ’on puisse apporter une assistance concrète et efficace.

En tant que Secrétaire du Conseil Pontifical pour la Pastorale des Migrants et des Personnes en Déplacement, je désire attirer en particulier lÂÂ’attention sur le fait que des milliers de travailleurs migrants sont restés bloqués par le conflit, et notre préoccupation particulière concerne les personnes qui proviennent des pays dÂÂ’Asie et dÂÂ’Afrique, qui sont encore plus abandonnées. Puissent les instances internationales leur venir en aide et les évacuer vers des lieux plus sûrs et/ou les assister afin de garantir leur retour chez eux dans la sécurité. 

En outre, environ 22.000 personnes (Soudanais et Irakiens) qui ont trouvé asile au Liban doivent affronter, avec des difficultés particulières, les conséquences des hostilités. Il leur serait dÂÂ’une grande aide si lÂÂ’on établissait des procédures facilitées dÂÂ’entrée en Syrie et si le gouvernement syrien leur permettait (aux Libanais, aux migrants et aux réfugiés reconnus) dÂÂ’entrer de façon temporaire dans le pays, en leur garantissant une protection également au cours de cette période de violence.

Nous souhaitons que la rencontre dÂÂ’aujourdÂÂ’hui à Rome affronte les divers aspects de la crise au Moyen-Orient et conduise à la fin des violences, à une aide adéquate à la population civile et au lancement de solutions globales, à long terme, en vue de lÂÂ’établissement de la paix et de la sécurité de toute la région.

ERKLARUNG VON ERZBISCHOF AGOSTINO MARCHETTO, SEKRETAR DES PÄPSTLICHEN RATES DER SEELSORGE FUR DIE MIGRANTEN UND MENSCHEN UNTERWEGS, ZU DEN MIGRANTEN, ASYLANTEN UND FLUCHTLINGEN IM LIBANON

In diesen besonders für den Libanon schwierigen Tagen möchte ich mich mit meiner Stimme denjenigen anschließen, die ein sofortiges Ende der Feindseligkeiten fordern. Auch müssen die Hilfsorganisationen Zugang erhalten zur leidenden oder auf der Flucht befindlichen Zivilbevölkerung. Hunderttausende Evakuierte brauchen auf schnellstem Wege Beistand. Es müssen daher humanitäre Korridore geschaffen werden, damit konkrete und wirksame Hilfe geleistet werden kann.  

Als Sekretär des Päpstlichen Rates der Seelsorge für die Migranten und Menschen unterwegs möchte ich die Aufmerksamkeit besonders auf die Tatsache lenken, daß Tausende von Wanderarbeitern in den Konflikt hineingezogen worden sind, wobei unsere besondere Sorge denen gilt, die aus Ländern Asiens oder Afrikas kommen und am wenigsten Beistand besitzen. Mögen die zuständigen internationalen Instanzen ihnen zu Hilfe kommen und sie an sicherere Orte evakuieren und/oder ihnen helfen, sicher nach Hause zurückzukehren.

Darüber hinaus sind etwa 22.000 Personen (Sudanesen und Iraker), die im Libanon Asyl erhalten haben, besonders schwer von den Folgen der Feindseligkeiten betroffen. Für sie alle wäre es eine große Hilfe, wenn vereinfachte Einreiseformalitäten nach Syrien entschieden werden konnten und wenn die syrische Regierung ihnen (den Libanesen, Migranten und anerkannten Asylanten) erlauben wurde, vorübergehend ins Land einzureisen und während dieser Zeit der gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen Schutz gewährleistete.

Wir hoffen, dass die heutige Zusammenkunft in Rom die unterschiedlichen Aspekte der Krise im Nahen Osten in Angriff nehmen und zu einem Ende der gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen führen wird, zu einer angemessenen Hilfe für die Zivilbevölkerung und zum Beginn von Langzeitlosungen auf globaler Ebene für den Frieden und die Sicherheit der ganzen Region.
