PRIEST AIMS FOR CULTURAL HEALING WITH MUSIC APOSTOLATE

Father Manuel Francisco, 32, a Jesuit priest and head of Bontoc-Lagawe apostolic vicariate's committee on indigenous liturgical music says that convincing indigenous peoples that their traditional chants and dances are not "devil worship," as they were taught by some missioners, is central to his ministry. He hopes to reverse effects of centuries of some Catholic missioners' condemnation of the culture of indigenous communities of Ifugao and the Mountain Province, more than 250 kilometers northwest of Manila at the foot of the Cordillera mountain range.

The people "are very confused, because for many generations they were made to believe that their culture is not inspired by the Holy Spirit." As a result, "they think that to be baptized Christians they need to embrace Western culture," said Father Francisco.

Citing the example of indigenous parishioners who he said have told him that they were ashamed to admit that they are Ifugaos while in college in the cities, he observed that "the Church made them feel ashamed and disliked, to the point of detaching themselves from their culture."

In his St. Joseph Parish in Kiangan, Ifugao province, however, and in other churches in the vicariate, indigenous Catholics are now encouraged to adapt their traditional chants or compose new ones for the liturgy. There are some 148,000 people in Ifugao, a landlocked area comprising 251,778 hectares. They occupy a steep landscape whose rice terraces and water control systems some people call the "eighth wonder of the world."

In the hope of "helping people remember what the Church had forced them to forget," the vicariate organized a series of inculturation programs for its priests and nuns, beginning with lectures by its apostolic vicar, Jesuit Bishop Francisco Claver, a social anthropologist. The lectures were followed by seminars on principles of music run by Father Francisco. For these, participants translated the responsorial psalms for the traditional Philippine pre-Christmas dawn Masses into their local languages.

In June the priest conducted another workshop in the Mountain Province, the home province of Bishop Claver and also covered by Bontoc-Lagawe vicariate. "The objective is to sing the liturgy, not just to sing during the liturgy," said Father Francisco who, by the end of his seminars, had celebrated the Mass in English, eight indigenous languages and his own native Tagalog language.

Among noteworthy outcomes, was the adaptation of the traditional Ifugao chant for wakes for the Mass acclamation. "Another group used for the Kyrie a chant asking God's mercy for a bountiful harvest," Father Francisco noted.

As a high school freshman at the Jesuit-run Ateneo De Manila, the future Father Francisco composed the song "Hindi Kita Malilimutan" (I will never forget you), drawing on Isaiah 49, which has won several awards. To date he has written more than 150 songs, including the "Great Amen" used for liturgical services during the 1995 visit of Pope John Paul II to Manila.

ARVO PÄRT’S MUSICAL SPIRITUALITY
AND THE EVANGELISATION OF CULTURE

In volume 1, number 4 of Logos. A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, published in affiliation with the Center for Catholic Studies at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota (U.S.A.), the liturgical composer Jan Michael Joncas - assistant professor of theology at U.S.T. - presents the work of Estonia’s most famous contemporary composer as a thoroughly Christian contribution to twentieth-century music.

While many class Pärt together with Taverner and Gorecki as a "holy minimalist", Joncas believes that his music "is both a serious critique of the spiritual aridity of much contemporary Western art music and a pointer to the future that repudiates much of what is considered the ‘evolution’ of the Western art-music heritage and yet creatively engages its foundations". Gregorian chant and Catholic liturgical music are the background to most of his compositions, which are usually for performance in a concert-hall, and yet are often based on biblical or liturgical texts. His instrumental works "bear titles that evoke the Christian faith".

After a very musical youth and a time at the Music Middle School in Tallinn, Pärt studied at the Tallinn Conservatory, and began work as a recording engineer for Estonian Radio as well as composing music for plays and films. Between 1960 and 1968 he produced several serial and collage compositions: serialism was developed by Schönberg, on the basis of a 12-tone system which replaced the accepted Western tonal system, and collage allows for the juxtaposition or superimposition of harmonic and (tonal or atonal) melodic elements with various noises to produce "new" sounds. His Nekrolog was censured by Tikhon Krenninov of the Soviet All-Union Congress of Composers because it was allegedly tainted with techniques from "avant-garde bourgeois music"; he had dedicated the work to the victims of Fascism, but meant it for all those broken by "civilisation", including the victims of communism.

Credo, written in 1968, is the piece which marks Pärt’s transition to what has become characteristic of his music, the technique known as tintinnabulation. Like the earlier Nekrolog, it caused a scandal, chiefly because it quoted Matthew’s version of the sermon on the mount in "a direct challenge to the prevailing ideology of class warfare", and put forward "an alternative way of living – that of Christ". The lex talionis section is set against a serialist "deconstruction" of the tonal system, and a chaotic aleatory section marked feroce fortissimo. In contrast, the Christian response to retribution is set against a gradual return to tonality.

During eight years of personal crisis, Pärt married, joined the Russian Orthodox Church and undertook a serious study of Gregorian chant and the vocal polyphonic tradition which arose from it. He produced a huge amount of new work between 1976 and 1977, and since 1980 has further refined his compositional technique.

The crisis currently facing Western art music "mirrors a crisis in Western civilisation itself, that is, the inability to find a common musical idiom for composers mirrors the inability to find a common philosophical framework for the civilization". Joncas mentions three aspects of the crisis, which place Pärt in context.

1. The role of the composer in society. Composers have been viewed and have functioned differently at different periods of history. Now the prevailing image is of the composer as "a worker providing a particular kind of labor for (segments of) society". In the West, it is a matter of marketable products whose success is measured in sales receipts. The Soviet system protected composers from Western-style pandering, but at the price of "state-decreed orthodoxies of expression".

2. Totalitarian desire: the strategies of serial music. The two main streams of composition in the twentieth century, serial and aleatory music, "have affinities with certain philosophical currents marking the modern world". Schönberg’s system was a genuinely new one, with a mechanism built into it "by which the absence of tonality could be guaranteed"; other composers extended this to different musical parameters, and the "apotheosis" of serial music is reproduction of a composition by computer. Serialist music is progressive, in the sense of playing down the sounds of past eras; it is thoroughly rational and it offers the composer total control – or even dispenses with the need for a composer. "Thus serialism represents the triumph of idealist philosophical thought in the musical realm…. It is the sonic mirror of Kant, Hegel and Schopenhauer".

3. Seduction of chaos: the strategies of aleatory music. In aleatory, or "chance", music, the performer can take over from the composer, who leaves performers an enormous amount of freedom. John Cage’s absolutely silent piece entitled 4'33" is the logical extreme of this approach, where "the composer’s task may be no more than to invite contemplation of the sonic dimension of existence without intruding human-sound manipulation upon it". Cage, in fact, admitted that his "purpose" was "to eliminate purpose" in music. Thus aleatory music is a close relative of post-structuralism, or of surrealism and da-daism in the visual arts. Joncas suggests that "the serialist project represents a fierce attempt to construct meaning in the face of absurdity and the aleatory project represents detached amusement before the fundamental meaninglessness of existence". Aleatory music’s aim of aestheticising all sonic events "represents the triumph of philosophical materialism".

The intellectual element is given pride of place in both of these approaches, probably as a deliberate reaction to romanticism’s exaltation of emotional expression. Pärt’s early music shows that he had mastered both tendencies; in his Credo, he employed them both "in a way that would affirm their valid insights, expose their inadequacies, and point to" a cultural and spiritual alternative to totalitarianism and chaos: Christian critical realism.

Pärt wondered how great works of art from the past could "appear to be more contemporary than our present art", and concluded that the secret to the contemporaneity of a great work of art lies in how thoroughly the artist has "perceived, not his own present, but the totality of life, its joys, worries and mysteries…. Art has to deal with eternal questions, not just sorting out the issues of today". The ultimate question that gives art meaning is: "Is it truth or falsehood?" (These quotations come from an interview given by Pärt in 1968 on Estonian Radio).

Pärt sees the composer as "shaped by, contributing to, and handing on a tradition". This is not a constraint, but liberation from the search for novelty or self-importance or shallowness of expression. His later compositions are like the work of an icon-painter. An icon is not meant to reproduce a historical scene, but "to disclose the eternal significance of a religious mystery in time for the sake of contemplation". The tradition, rather than the artist’s personal creativity, is what gives an icon its authenticity; "the icon-painter submits to the demands of a tradition and becomes its living exemplar". Arvo Pärt’s compositions show a remarkable submission to the Christian tradition, above all in the music which comes after his rejection of serial and aleatory music, and particularly in his tintinnabuli style, which has been described as "a single moment spread out in time". He deliberately avoids self-assertion in favour of a desire to give space to what transcends the individual; "ultimately music makes audible the presence of divine eternity in human history". In fact, the triadic basis of tintinnabulation is taken to be a deliberate symbolic representation of the Trinity.

The 1968 radio interview was really a very bold admission of his (Christian) monotheism on atheist-controlled state radio, and it reveals a profound purgative indifference to many of the things which are deemed to be essential in Western art music – "eras, styles, forms, orchestration, harmony, polyphony". Grace, rather than talent and technique, is highly prized in Pärt’s understanding of worthwhile composition. This "spiritual growth is a long and arduous process, the antithesis of instant gratification", and Pärt’s spiritual approach to composition has been compared to the hesychastic tradition in Orthodoxy. "Pärt’s music arises from silence, returns to silence, and is pervaded by silence": it is not activism, but contemplation.

So there is a clear understanding of the composer as witness to a living tradition, as transmitter of spiritual values, but also as herald of truth. The compositions which are settings of texts are not a technical deconstruction or reconstruction of those texts, since his music "has cognitive content which can enhance and enrich the specific cognitive content communicated in language". His choice of Latin or Church Slavonic may mean that Pärt "is attempting to indicate the culture-transcending truth of these texts by setting them in languages that bridge back from the contemporary period to the foundational periods of the Western art-music tradition".

The article concludes with an exploration of Pärt’s setting of the Magnificat, to demonstrate how this composition reveals him as "witness to a living tradition, transmitter of spiritual values, and herald of truth".

A SERVICE TO CATHOLIC THOUGHT AND CULTURE:
THE UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS

The Center for Catholic Studies, at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, Minnesota (United States of America), has reached the fourth issue of the first volume of Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, which is an interdisciplinary quarterly "committed to exploring the beauty, truth, and vitality of Christianity, particularly as it is rooted in and shaped by Catholicism. It welcomes contributions from all who wish to join in exploring, nurturing, and transmitting the vast and multiform tradition of Christian thought and culture. As no field is alien to this tradition, Logos welcomes submissions in art, literature, social and public policy, theology, history, music, the natural sciences, and the professions".

The current issue bears out this extraordinary claim to breadth of interest. The editor, Michael Allen Mikolajczak, points out that editorial policy has moved towards one of "blind review" of unsolicited articles, which favours a certain degree of objectivity and openness.

The first two articles are on the American Catholic writer Walker Percy, the first by John Desmond (president of the Walter Percy Society of America), on Percy’s position in the philosophical debate on nominalism and realism. It contains a useful illumination of Percy’s distinction between knowledge and news, the latter being the category of information which tells us more about the teacher than about the teaching, and is of great existential significance: this is the category which counts in theological terms. The second article is a reflection by Kathleen Scullin on two biographies of Percy written since he died of cancer in 1990. One of them is criticised because, while it has the right juxtaposition of events, it fails to explore "how they ‘triangulate’ to reveal meaning", whereas the second is credited with "getting at the heart of Percy’s ‘real life’".

In a notoriously delicate area, Adam Schwartz contributes an amazingly thoroughly researched piece on the reaction of British Catholic intellectuals to this century’s liturgical changes. "The outlook of three of them in particular – novelist Graham Greene (1904-1991), historian Christopher Dawson (1889-1970), and poet-painter David Jones (1895-1974) – demonstrates how Catholic intellectuals of different backgrounds and areas of literary interest shared a common fear that changes in liturgy represented a larger attempt by the Church to accommodate modernity. As a pivotal appeal of Catholicism to all of them had been its anti-modern attitudes, they were distressed that what had seemed the last stable bastion of traditional Christianity was on the verge of abandoning its heritage and, in the process, depriving these cultural dissidents of what had become their central source of inspiration and identity".

This edition of Logos includes two articles on music. The first, on Arvo Pärt’s contribution to the evangelisation of culture through music, is summarised elsewhere in this section. The second, by H. Wendell Howard, claims that Puccini’s Suor Angelica is Catholic not because of its title, but because of its composer’s evident belief in God’s forgiveness. There is a suggestion that what the opera’s critics "really dislike is exactly that which made Puccini like it the most: it is an unabashed statement of the composer’s love and understanding of the Roman Catholic Church and its precepts".

The integrity of the human person is at the heart of an article by John F. Crosby on "Conscience and Superego: A Phenomenological Analysis of Their Difference and Relation". While "the superego commonly represents a pathology of individual personal existence and always represents at least a weakness of personal existence", conscience is to be seen as "the most authentic, awakened personal existence". Personalist psychology is not reductive, like Freudianism, but "will know how to help sufferers beyond the moral immaturity of the superego, towards the fullness of personal life in conscience".

The remaining three articles are all about Christianity and literature. Kathleen Burk-Henderson revisits the oft-forgotten Caroline Gordon, whose last novel, The Glory of Hera, "attempts to portray how Christ and transcendent reality are most fully and accurately encountered through the feminine, an idea that Gordon partially derived from medieval women mystics". Margaret Bauer’s examination of Moby Dick sees Ishmael’s prophecy as "an accurate foreshadowing of the anxieties of humankind in this Modern age", and the battle with the whale as somehow analogous to that between Christ and Satan. Mary R. Reichart reviews John C. Whitehouse’s Catholics on Literature, whose twenty-two subjects "strove intensely to reconcile their faith with their art". She is pleased that, despite the Catholic Church’s tradition of "censoring objectionable material", it has never promulgated a theory of literature or art, because "if it had, any author of substance and integrity would most likely opt to exercise the ‘virtue of disloyalty’ that Graham Greene insisted must be practiced to counter any person, ideology, or institution that threatens to sway an artist’s allegiance away from his primary duty to write truthfully and impartially".

The Interdisciplinary Program in Catholic Studies at the University of Saint Thomas also produces an occasional pamphlet entitled Ex Libris, which gives brief but good introductions to books in the Catholic intellectual tradition. The 1996 edition reviews works by Saint Augustine of Hippo, Henri de Lubac, Edith Stein, Christopher Dawson, G. K. Chesterton, Romano Guardini, John Courtney Murray, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Shusaku Endo, Evelyn Waugh, Walker Percy, Rumer Godden and T.S. Eliot.

DOSTOYEVSKY AND WEIL
ON RELIGIOUS, NATIONAL AND EUROPEAN IDENTITY

Stephen Plant is a Methodist minister and Europe secretary of the Methodist Church in Britain. In the September/December 1998 edition of the Keston journal Religion, State and Society he considers two very different authors’ contributions to the heady mixture of religion, culture and nationalism in the context of Europe.

Hopes of European integration, perceived very differently on either side of the Iron Curtain, have been abruptly tempered by the resurgence of nationalism across the continent. Religion has played a very significant role: in Eastern European countries the national character of Orthodox Christianity is as clear and as complex as the links between religious and political identities in Ireland. Dostoyevsky and Weil are invoked as offering "useful insights into the value and limitations of national identity from a Christian perspective": despite their many differences in situation and in character, they both "argue that national culture, language, values, and a properly understood nationalism are not antithetical to any higher good, but the best, perhaps the only way towards universal human fellowship". The spiritual content they perceive in these values and identities adds a special ingredient to merely human ideologies.

Christ was at the centre of all Dostoyevsky’s writing about Russia and "religion was the engine driving his novels". His speech on the occasion of the unveiling of a statue of Pushkin in Moscow in 1880 shows his disdain for those Westernisers who hankered after ‘Europe’ in a way which missed the soul or spirit of their own culture. Yet within the Russian soul is an extraordinary capacity for "upholding the ideal of a universal union of mankind, of brotherly love, of the calm conception which forgives all contrasts, allows for and excuses the unlike, and softens all contradictions". Dostoyevsky was convinced that Russia was enlightened to such a degree that it had absolutely no need to look to Europe: "I assert that our people became enlightened long ago, by taking into its eternal soul Christ and his teaching…". Indeed, Russia alone was enlightened in this sense. He was hypercritical of Western Christianity, which had "distorted the image of Christ" in both Catholicism and Protestantism. He foresaw disaster in the West because of a failure to be faithful to Christ, and, in contrast to the deep universal brotherhood characteristic of a genuinely Russian vision, he "concluded that the comedic multicultural identity of Europe’s bourgeoisie and intelligentsia simply could not be taken seriously as the natural or proper form of human unity".

Simone Weil’s book The Need for Roots, subtitled "a prelude to a declaration of duties towards mankind", is in three sections. The first makes a plea for obligations to be given pride of place in contemporary French political discussion, which was dominated by talk of human rights. The obligations she had in mind reflected physical and moral needs, or needs of the body and (equally earthly) needs of the soul. Part of her vision was a profound respect for human collectivities, which "act as repositories for the preservation of spiritual treasures, the traditions of their members". The second part deals with human roots: "A human being has roots by virtue of his real, active, and natural participation in the life of a community which preserves in living shape certain particular treasures of the past and certain particular expectations of the future". But the nation is, for Weil, simply a fact, which must not be absolutised: "A Christian has only one country that can be the object of such patriotism, which is situated outside this world". So she combines respect for the nation with an awareness of the historical contingency of culture: the correct attitude to one’s country is compassion, not idolatry. The third part of her book demonstrates how the roots we have need to draw on the supernatural.

Both authors see risks in rootlessness, and insist on "the fact that national identity, nationalism, must have spiritual roots. These cannot be created; they are already present". The things they discussed are continued in the writings of Michael Ignatieff, who sees belonging to a nation as an expression of the human individual’s natural need for roots. For him, problems arise when the nation is seen as "the only context in which" needs like justice, liberty and solidarity "may be met, to the exclusion of all other contexts. This remains true whether such a perception is religious or secular in origin. So many religious nationalisms fail to recognise that national and religious ‘belonging’ must include openness to the needs of strangers. The theological challenge is to understand national ‘belonging’ in the context of the need for roots, roots which have a ‘spiritual’ dimension".

CHILEAN SOCIOLOGIST REMARKS THAT
CULTURE MUST "HUMANIZE" MAN

Fernando Moreno, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Chilean University "Gabriela Mistral", pronounced an interesting conference under the title "Person, nature and culture". During his conference Moreno reminded the Holy Father's thought on the topic of culture, pointing out also that "culture supposes the interiority of the human being, whose root is the spirit". In this respect, he stated that "culture has the human person as its cause and it searches to make him each time more perfect".

Criticizing the visions that indicate that all cultural manifestations are good only because they exists, he manifested stated that "cultures are so, as long as they are orientated to the authentic "good" for man", because culture is by definition "that which makes men to end up being what they are". Later on, he pointed out that the human being as a person is a "centre of freedom" and an "opened centre", "called to overcome himself in the encounter with God and men and in the donation of himself".

FE Y CULTURA: CARDENAL RUINI ANUNCIA REALIZACIÓN

CHANGING PATTERNS OF RELIGIOUS PRACTICE
AMONG IRISH CATHOLICS

Surveys in Ireland have shown a significant drop in the number of people attending Mass every week. In 1973 the national average was 91%; ten years later it was 87%, in 1994 77%, and in January 1998 60%. As Father Bill Cosgrave wrote recently, "it is cold comfort indeed to encourage ourselves by pointing out that 60% is very high by European standards. This may be so but by Irish standards it still represents a steep decline in just twenty-five years".

Father Cosgrave reports that some of the reasons for non-attendance given by those interviewed for the survey are linked directly to the experience of attending Mass. The first is that Mass is "dull" or "boring". This is an inevitable reaction to a familiar part of life. But "many Masses are poorly planned and celebrated", and musical resources are thin or buildings are uninspiring. "The experience that Mass is dull or boring because of one or more of these factors is not countered by giving a learned account of the theology of the Mass, as is sometimes done". People are not questioning that, but speaking of what they actually experience. Today, though, Catholics are more forthright in expressing their views and in exercising personal choice, "even in the face of a Church law like that about going to Mass on Sunday". 23% of those interviewed also claim that priests are not really in touch with the lives of their congregations. They seem to want priests who are open to "the best in contemporary experience and thinking…, while being also alert to and critical of the faulty tendencies and values that are present in society today and at times also in the Church". The most discouraging finding is the number of people who find it is too much trouble to go to Mass. "Clearly for these people Mass-going ranks rather low on their list of priorities…. This state of affairs is probably in large measure a result of a negative experience of Mass-going combined with the influence of the materialistic and secular atmosphere that is so pervasive and powerful in numerous subtle ways in our Celtic tiger economy and society today". Fear of mortal sin connected with failure to attend Mass has practically disappeared, and there has been quite a clear decline in social pressure. This seems to be something irreversible. Given that this leaves the Catholic Church in Ireland "in a situation where only the committed will be regular Mass-goers", Father Cosgrave sees this as "a positive development".

Other reasons for non-attendance at Mass relate more to contemporary culture. The first is the image of Church leaders as "old-fashioned, conservative, authoritarian and negative about modern life and society". This image has been "strengthened by the recent spate of clerical sexual scandals, because of which trust in and respect for priests and bishops has taken a sharp dip". (It must be remembered that 72% of those surveyed approve of the spiritual and community work done by priests.) This "growing lukewarmness in the allegiance of many Catholics to their Church and of an increasing alienation from an institution they respect less" fits into the more secular ethos of Irish (and Western) society, which is generally "less favourable to and sometimes even negative or hostile towards religious faith… and especially to the institutional Church". This is often a feature of the way the communications media deal with religious matters.

Research done in other countries suggests that the reasons for not going to church are "social not religious or ecclesiastical reasons and hence they are quite outside the control and even the influence of clergy and of Church policy, attitudes and activities". This appears difficult for Church leaders to accept. Only half of those who come to church do so for genuinely religious reasons, and over half would come "no matter what the priest or Church leadership does or doesn’t do".

A decline in numbers "will not necessarily signal a decline in the quality of the Christian life of that parish, diocese or Church". It is hard to be sure of what it means, beyond obvious things like financial implications. It is important to be realistic about what the Church can and cannot influence; the essential struggle is to deepen commitment to the Christian life and to improve the quality of many aspects of it, particularly the celebration of Sunday Mass.
