DOCUMENTAJEAN-PAUL II - JOHN PAUL II
Inculturing the truths of the Gospel
At the beginning of a new millennium the Church in Thailand is being challenged to present the mystery of Christ in a way that corresponds to your peopleÂs cultural patterns and ways of thinking, by drawing on the positive elements of ThailandÂs great human patrimony. On the other hand, the process of inculturation calls for careful discernment on your part to ensure that the principles of compatibility with the Gospel and communion with the universal Church are fully respected. Clearly, inculturation is more than external adaptation, for it entails Âthe intimate transformation of authentic cultural values through their integration into Christianity and the insertion of Christianity in the various human cultures (Redemptoris Missio, 52). I urge you to make continuing efforts in this field, so that the truths and values of the Gospel will be seen ever more clearly as responding to your peopleÂs genuine spiritual and human needs and aspirations.

ÂUna voz dice: «¡Grita!»Â (Is 40,6).

Exhortation apostolique Ecclesia in Oceania
16. The process of inculturation is the gradual way in which the Gospel is incarnated in the various cultures. On the one hand, certain cultural values must be transformed and purified, if they are to find a place in a genuinely Christian culture. On the other hand, in various cultures Christian values readily take root. Inculturation is born out of respect for both the Gospel and the culture in which it is proclaimed and welcomed. The process of inculturation began in Oceania as immigrant people brought the Christian faith from their homelands. For the indigenous peoples of Oceania, inculturation meant a new conversation between the world that they had known and the faith to which they had come. As a result, Oceania offers many examples of unique cultural expressions in the areas of theology, liturgy and the use of religious symbols. [ ] Inculturation, the Âincarnation of the Gospel in the various cultures, affects the very way in which the Gospel is preached, understood and lived. The Church teaches the unchanging truth of God, addressed to the history and the culture of a particular people. Therefore, in each culture the Christian faith will be lived in a unique way. [ ] ÂThe Gospel is not opposed to any culture, as if engaging a culture the Gospel would seek to strip it of its native riches and force it to adopt forms which are alien to itÂ. It is vital that the Church insert herself fully into culture and from within bring about the process of purification and transformation. An authentic inculturation of the Gospel has a double aspect. On the one hand, a culture offers positive values and forms which can enrich the way the Gospel is preached, understood and lived. On the other hand, the Gospel challenges cultures and requires that some values and forms change. [ ] The process of inculturation engages the Gospel and culture in Âa dialogue which includes identifying what is and what is not of ChristÂ. Every culture needs to be purified and transformed by the values which are revealed in the Paschal Mystery. In this way, the positive values and forms found in the cultures of Oceania will enrich the way the Gospel is preached, understood and lived.

ASIAN AND PACIFIC PRESENCE: HARMONY IN FAITH
The following are excerpts taken from the U.S. Bishops Pastoral Statement entitled Asian and Pacific Presence: Harmony in Faith which was released on 3rd December, 2001. The text was overwhelmingly approved and is an expression of Âheartfelt concern for the Asian and Pacific people in the United States [The full text of the Pastoral Statement can be found in Origins January 3, 2002, Vol. 31, No. 29].
1. Though this pastoral letter is a teaching instrument about all of our Asian and Pacific sisters and brothers, most sections will focus on Asians from the South, South-east and East Asian regions since more than two-thirds of Americans of Asian heritage and a majority of recent immigrants are from these regions. 2. Asian and Pacific American communities exhibit great complexities and disparities. Their challenge is that of diversity  ethnicity, language, culture, place of birth, religious tradition, recency of U.S. arrival and endowment of human capital. They are among the best endowed and yet the least endowed of all Americans. They are among the best and the least educated. 3. Except for the Filipinos, the majority of Asian and Pacific people in the United States are followers of Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism and Islam. 4. Today the number of Asian and Pacific Catholics in the United States presents a difficult and complex question. Hard data is difficult to obtain or is non-existent. Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza has pointed out that ÂCatholics from Asia, especially from the Philippines and Vietnam, make up the third largest group of people of color and account for about 2.6% of the Catholics in the United StatesÂ. 5. Many Asian and Pacific Catholics who migrated to this country came with a rich experience of being active lay members and ministers of the Church. 6. The arrival of immigrants  even of those who come bearing gifts of time, talent and treasure  creates challenges and tensions. The very gifts they bring challenge the Church to view itself and the world in a different perspective. Asian and Pacific communities present different ways of relating to other people, of believing, of praying, of being church. 7. Caught between seeming contradictions, many Asian and Pacific youth experience a deep identity crisis that becomes more serious as the communication and generation gap between the youth and elders widens. 8. Learning about inter-cultural communication is doubly important because it is needed not only to work effectively in various ministries, but also to help the different ethnic and cultural communities in our parishes understand what is happening to them. Sometimes it is mistakenly presumed that everyone knows all about intercultural communication because American society is multicultural.
In the conclusion the U.S. Bishops state: ÂBy being authentically Christian and truly Asian in the footsteps of Christ, they have brought to us a more profound understanding of what it means to be truly Catholic. They have taught the church in the United States the meaning of harmony; the necessity of dialogue with their cultures, with other religions and with the poor; a renewed sense of family loyalty; the unity between diverse cultures and diverse Catholic Church communities; and the closeness of all GodÂs creationÂ.
