Figli e Fratelli!

Il momento storico presente attrae, non distrae, oggi la nostra preghiera festiva.
Noi tutti dobbiamo pregare per l’esito positivo delle discussioni in corso alle Nazioni Unite circa la proroga della tregua d’armi nel vicino Oriente, la quale tregua, com’è noto, dovrebbe scadere il prossimo 5 novembre. Questo fatto ci sembra di così larga e grave importanza da riguardare anche il nostro spirituale interesse.
Che cosa succederebbe se questa proroga non fosse raggiunta, e alla tregua scaduta dovesse succedere la ripresa delle ostilità? È pur troppo facile prevedere che la speranza della pace e la possibilità della giusta composizione del conflitto sarebbero compromesse per chi sa per quanto tempo ancora. Anzi non è improbabile che la lotta si farebbe più grave, forse coinvolgendo in una prova di forza altre Potenze oltre le Nazioni direttamente impegnate nel già troppo lungo, troppo dispendioso e troppo lacrimoso conflitto. Quale somma nuova di vittime e di rovine potrebbe registrare il bilancio di questa triste contesa! e quale pericolo per l’incolumità delle popolazioni civili per la causa della giustizia e della pace! quale regresso nello sforzo di organizzare la concordia e la collaborazione fra tutti i Popoli protagonisti o vittime del presente conflitto! E dove potrebbe portare la nuova tensione bellica quando una recrudescenza delle rivalità in atto irrigidisse le rispettive ragioni ideali del presente contrasto?
Noi abbiamo fiducia nella riflessione responsabile e lungimirante delle Parti interessate, nella saggezza equanime dei Rappresentanti delle grandi Potenze, the si sono qualificate per porre fine a questa tragica vicenda, e confidiamo nel libero ed equilibrato giudizio della Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite. Il mondo guarda con trepida attesa, ed ha oggi più the mai bisogno d’essere confortato nella speranza di una pace raggiunta per via di ragionevoli e civili trattative.
Noi all’ansiosa aspettativa aggiungiamo il voto the non manchi ai protagonisti della storica vicenda l’assistenza di Dio, Padre di tutti, e la invochiamo, oggi festa dei Santi, mediante la loro celeste intercessione, auspice la Regina dei Santi e della pace.

His Excellency
Evard Hambro President of the 25th session of the United Nations
At this time when the General Assembly of the United Nations is examining the delicate and complex problem of the Middle East, We wish to address Ourself to Your Excellency on the subject of the military truce in that area. We are convinced that it is highly desirable not only because of the suspension of violence but also as a positive step which may facilitate the beginning of peace talks.
We have addressed an appeal to the Heads of State concerned, in order that they may do whatever is in their power so that the truce may be opportunely extended.
We desire to inform Your Excellency of Our fervent hope that the United Nations will make its valuable contribution towards a reconciliation, which will serve to reaffirm the principles of justice, understanding and security for all the Nations of the Middle East.
As We invoke the Spirit of God upon all those ho strive for peace in the world, We express to Your Excellency the assurances of Our high consideration.

We wish to address ourself respectfully to Your Excellency to express to you the hope that on the part of the Israeli Government nothing will be omitted in order that the terms of the military truce in the Middle East may be opportunely extended. We are deeply convinced that this first positive result will constitute the indispensable prelude to the desidered peaceful solution.
As We send you this Our confident appeal, We pray the Lord that he may accompany peoples and rulers with his inspiration of justice and peace.

We have the honour to address Ourself to Your Majesty to inform You of Our fervent wishes that the military truce already established in the Middle East may be opportunely extended.
We nourish the firm confidence that Jordan, for its part, will do all that is possible so that the truce may be confirmed in such a way as to make it possible to begin peace talks, and so that the important problem of the Palestinian refugees may receive a just and adequate solution.
We present to Your Majesty the assurances of Our highest consideration, and We pray almighty God for the peace, tranquillity and progress of the peoples of Jordan.

President of the United Arab Republic - Cairo
We have the honour to address Ourself for the first time to Your Excellence to espress to You Our sincere confidence that the action of the Government of the United Arab Republic will contribute efficaciously to the realization of peace in the Middle East. We fervently hope that all the countries concerned, and in a particular way the United Arab Republic, will collaborate to extend the terms of the truce which has been established and also to do all that is possible in order that it will lead to the conversations which will prepare for peace.
We pray the Lord that the first favourable signs which have appeared at this time may be consolidated and may bring a just and peaceful solution.
