ARAMBURU Card. Juan Carlos

Cardinal Juan Carlos Aramburu, Archbishop emeritus of Buenos Aires and Ordinary emeritus for the faithful of Oriental rite in Argentina who do not have an ordinary of their own rite, was born on 11 February 1912 in Reducción (Argentina). He was ordained priest on 28 October 1934 in Rome, where he obtained doctorates in canon law and moral theology.

On his return to Argentina he was immediately assigned to academic work, firstly in the diocesan seminary of Cordoba and later as professor of higher religious studies at the faculty of arts and philosophy of the National University of Cordoba.

On 7 October 1946 Pius XII nominated him titular bishop of Plataea and auxiliary of Tucuman. He later succeeded to that See and when it was raised to the dignity of a metropolitan see he became its first archbishop.

On 14 June 1967 Paul VI appointed him to the titular see pro hac vice archiepiscopal of Turres in Byzacena and coadjutor with the right of succession to the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He succeeded to the that see on 22 April 1975.

As pastor of this vast diocese, he dedicated himself to many aspects of diocesan life. In collaboration with the Holy See he arranged for the division of the diocese into four pastoral zones, reorganizing the entire curia and establishing special councils for pastoral, doctrinal and liturgical activity.

He took part in the Vatican Council and in various Synods of Bishops. He was also involved in CELAM and various commissions of the Latin American Bishops.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Paul VI in the Consistory of 24 May 1976, of the Title of S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini (St. John of the Florentines).

Cardinal Juan Carlos Aramburu died on 18 November 2004.
