BETORI Card. Giuseppe



Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, Archbishop of Florence (Italy), was born on 25 February 1947 in Foligno, Italy.

He was ordained a priest on 26 September 1970. He holds a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a doctorate in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

He worked in various capacities in the Diocese of Foligno, including diocesan assistant in Catholic Action and secretary general of the diocesan Synod. He also served as director of the National Catechetical Office, with special attention to sound catechetical texts for youth and adults, and collaborated in the Italian translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He also organized the ecclesial conferences in Palermo (1995) and in Verona (2006), and was a member of the monitoring committee of the Lombard Pontifical Seminary in Rome.

On 5 April 2001, he was appointed titular Bishop of Falerone and general secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). He received episcopal ordination on 6 May 2001.

On 8 September 2008, he was appointed Archbishop of Florence and was installed on 26 October. He left his position as general secretary of the CEI on 25 September 2008.

On 10 February 2009, he was elected President of the Episcopal Conference of Tuscany.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Benedict XVI in the consistory of 18 February 2012, of the Title of San Marcello (St. Marcellus).
