CALCAGNO Card. Domenico

 

Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, born on 3 February 1943 in Tramontana di Parodi Ligure, Italy.  He holds a BA in philosophy and a doctorate  in dogmatic theology.

He was ordained a priest on 25 February 1967. In 1968 he became parochial vicar in the parish of Sant’Ambrogio a Uscio and taught at the major seminary in Genoa.

In August 1969, he was appointed rector of the Oratorio di Sant’Erasmo in Genoa-Quinto and after serving on the presbyteral council both on a diocesan and regional level, he became secretary of the Italian Presbyteral commission.

In 1985 he was appointed president of the Diocesan Institute for the Support of the Diocesan Clergy of Genoa. In 1989 he was sent to Rome to become director of the Office for Inter-Church Missionary Cooperation and, in 1992, he also taught theology at the Pontifical Urbanian University.

In 1996 he was nominated president of the Central Institute for the Support of the Clergy, and in 1999 treasurer of the Italian Episcopal Conference.

On 25 January 2002 he was appointed Bishop of Savona-Noli and received episcopal ordination on 9 March 2002.

On 7 July 2007 he was secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) with the title of archbishop ad personam.

He was appointed President of APSA on 7 July 2011.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Benedict XVI in the consistory of 18 February 2012, of the Deaconry dell’Annunciazione della Beata Vergine Maria a Via Ardeatina (Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Via Ardeatina).
