SUMMARY

WORKING GROUPS: THIRTEENTH, FOURTEENTH, FIFTEENTH AND SIXTEENTH SESSIONS

Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday morning of October 22nd, 23rd and 24th 2001, discussion in the Working Groups continued. There was no Session on the morning of Monday October 22nd 2001. During the Thirteenth Session 231 Fathers were present, the Fourteenth 234, the Fifteenth 223 and during the Sixteenth 167.

The last phase of the work in the Working Groups ended with the approval by each Working Group on the collective amendments, through an absolute majority ballot, and given by the Rapporteurs of the Working Groups to the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops, yesterday morning October 24th 2001 at the end of the discussion in the Working Groups.

Study on the collective amendments by the Working Groups continues, which began yesterday afternoon Wednesday October 24th 2001, by the Adjunct General Relator, the Special Secretary and the Rapporteurs of the Working Groups, according to what is provided in the Calendar of Synod Works, published in Bulletin No. 2. The result will be presented in the form of a Final List of Propositions, during the Twenty-fourth General Congregation tomorrow morning Friday October 26th 2001, with the balloting foreseen during the Twenty-fifth (and last) General Congregation tomorrow afternoon.

TWENTY-THIRD GENERAL CONGREGATION (THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25TH 2001 - AFTERNOON)

At 17:05 today Thursday October 25th 2001, in the presence of the Holy Father, with the prayer Adsumus, the Twenty-Third General Congregation took place, for the presentation and the balloting on the Message of the Synod of Bishops to the People of God. The President Delegate on duty was H. Em. Card. Giovanni Battista RE, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops.

This General Congregation ended at 18:30 with the prayer Angelus Domini and 235 Fathers were present.

Election of the Post-Synodal Council - Results of the first balloting

At the beginning of this Twenty-third General Congregation, the Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops H. Em Card. Jan Pieter SCHOTTE, C.I.C.M. communicated the results of the first balloting for the Post-Synodal Council. 233 votes were expressed. None of the Synod Fathers obtained the absolute majority required in the first balloting. The ballots for the second vote (which will be determined through relative majority) will be distributed at the beginning of the Twenty-fourth General Congregation, tomorrow morning Friday October 26th 2001.

Presentation of the Message

Then, the following intervened during the Twenty-third General Congregation, the President and the

Vice President of the Commission for the preparation of the Message, H. E. Estanislao Esteban KARLIC, Archbishop of Paraná (the first part in Italian) and H. E. Olivier DE BERRANGER, Bishop of Saint-Denis in France (in French, for the second part), for the presentation of the second scheme of the Message of the Synod of Bishops to the People of God, edited in 5 language versions.

Voting on the Message

Then, the voting on the Message took place, followed by interventions by 27 Synod Fathers, to contribute a few stylistic modifications to the text.

The text of the Message of the Synod of Bishops to the People of God, which was approved, will be published for the occasion of the Press Conference that will take place tomorrow Friday October 26th 2001 at 12:45 in the John Paul II Hall of the Holy See Press Office.

SYNOD WORKS

The Twenty-fourth General Congregation, for the Second vote on the Post-Synodal Council of the General Secretariat and for the presentation of the Final List of Propositions, will take place tomorrow afternoon Friday October 26th 2001.

The Twenty-fifth and final General Congregation, for the vote on the Propositions and for the Conclusion of the Synod works, will take place tomorrow afternoon Friday October 26th 2001.

INFORMATION POOL FOR THE SYNOD HALL

The thirteenth (and last) information pool for the Synod Hall will be formed for the opening prayer of the Twenty-fourth General Congregation, tomorrow morning Friday October 26th 2001.

We would like to recall that the audio-visual operators (cameramen and technicians) and photographers are kindly requested to apply to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications to participate in the information pool for the Synod Hall.

We would also like to remind the participants in the Information Pool that they are kindly requested to be at the Press Area at 8:30 a.m., outside the entrance of the Paul VI Hall, when they will be called by name to enter the Synod Hall, always accompanied respectively by an officer of the Holy See Press Office and from the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

PRESS CONFERENCE

The third (and last) Press Conference on the Synod work, after the presentation of the Final List of Propositions, will take place tomorrow Friday October 26th 2001, at 12:45, in the John Paul II Hall of the Holy See Press Office, with simultaneous translations in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

The following will intervene:

  • H.E. Most Rev. John Patrick FOLEY, Titular Archbishop of Neapolis in Proconsulari, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications (Vatican City), President of the Commission for Information of the X Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.
  • H.E. Most Rev. Telesphore Placidus TOPPO, Archbishop of Ranchi (India), Vice-President of the Commission for Information of the X Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.
  • H.E. Most Rev. Estanislao Esteban KARLIC, Archbishop of Paraná (Argentina), President of the Episcopal Conference, President of the Commission for the Message of the X Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.
  • H.E. Most Rev. Olivier DE BERRANGER, Bishop of Saint-Denis in France (France), Vice- President of the Commission for the Message of the X Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.
  • H.E. Most Rev. Marcello SEMERARO, Bishop of Oria (Italy), Special Secretary of the X Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

BULLETIN

The next Bulletin No. 29 (with the text of the Message), will be available for the accredited journalists tomorrow Friday October 26th 2001, at the same time as the Third and final Press Conference on the Synod Work, in the John Paul II Hall of the Holy See Press Office.

Bulletin No. 30 (with the summary of the Twenty-fourth General Congregation of Friday morning October 26th 2001) will be available for the accredited journalists at the conclusion of the assembly.
