Beloved Brother in Jesus Christ, God's grace and peace be with you.

With great joy and gratitude we welcomed your invitation, in accordance with the wish of His Holiness the Pope of Rome, John Paul II, to send a fraternal delegate to actively participate in the Tenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, that will be held in Rome from September 30^th to October 27^th on the theme "The Bishop: Servant of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the Hope of the World".

We wish to inform you that we designated as the representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate the Bishop of Reghion, his Excellency Emmanuel for the first days of the Synod, and for the following days, the Metropolitan of Oulu, his Excellency Ambrosius, who will directly transmit to the General Secretary of the Synod, His Eminence Cardinal Jan P. Schotte, and to all the Synod Fathers our most cordial greetings and our fraternal love.

At the same time we wish to express our satisfaction for the theme chosen for this Synod. This topic makes the Bishops aware of their main duty, that is the service to the Word, as the Apostle Peter said when he proposed the appointment of seven deacons (Acts 6,2) and the Apostle Paul repeated to Titus, when he wrote that the Bishop must have a firm grasp of the word that is trustworthy in accordance with the teaching, "so that he may be able both to preach with sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it" (Tit 1,9).

Above all these duties what comes most into prominence is the words of our Lord Jesus Christ himself "Go into the world and proclaim the good news" (Mk 16,15) and "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, … and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you" (Mt 28, 19-20). The search for the true content of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is always real and necessary and teaching should be consistent with "sound doctrine", because every person is in danger of subjective judgement that may lead to error, that is, to substitute what the Lord commands with the application of doctrines made by men and women.

For the sure knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the best way is the personal relationship with him, that comes from love towards him and is completed by the observance of his commandments. All this should be accompanied by complete trust in God, who allowed Jesus Christ to come and dwell in our hearts. When this happens "Christ lives in us" and we think as Christ does and we teach what is true, and live rightly, by serving the Gospel, that is the only hope of humankind.

I cordially wish all the Synod Fathers to have our Lord Jesus Christ living in their hearts, so that each one of you may serve the Gospel, hope of the world, as Christ wishes.

In apertura della Diciottesima Congregazione Generale di venerdì 12 ottobre 2001 sono intervenuti i seguenti Padri sinodali, che non hanno potuto parlare nella Diciassettesima Congregazione Generale di giovedì pomeriggio 11 ottobre 2001, per mancanza di tempo:

Diamo qui di seguito i riassunti degli interventi:

Exc.mus D.nus Marcelo Arturo GONZÁLEZ AMADOR, Episcopus Sanctae Clarae (Santa Clara, Cuba).

Procedo de una Iglesia pequeña, que ha tenido que fijar su mirada en el Traspasado, en el Cristo doliente y Resucitado, para encontrar en Ella razón de su ser, la fortaleza indispensable en medio de las pruebas y la paciencia necesaria para vivir en la esperanza, asumiendo cada instante de su historia como tiempo de gracia, hora de Dios.

Mi reflexión nace a partir del número 9 del Instrumentum Laboris: el nuevo rostro del obispo. Todo esto me lleva a pensar en cinco aspectos. 1. Somos los hombres de Dios y los hombres nos quieren como Dios: Santos. Ellos nos buscan para encontrar en nosotros lo que no pueden encontrar en otros, a Dios; quieren que les hablemos de Dios, con nuestra experiencia, y quieren que le hablemos a Dios de ellos. 2. Nos quieren ver totalmente libres, sin dependencias ni ataduras, sin sumisiones ni filiación a poder alguno, a nadie; sin condicionamiento y manipulación de ningún tipo. Es decir, nos quieren totalmente distantes de los poderes políticos y económicos, plenamente a disposición de Cristo, Única fuente de salvación 3. Los fieles nos quieren hombres capaces de iluminar los criterios y aunar las voluntades, es decir, de crear un ambiente de consenso. 4. La vida cotidiana nos lleva a estar en relación con todos los hombres. Este pueblo espera de nosotros la delicadeza ante toda miseria humana y la valentía de defender los derechos de todo hombre, por los medios legítimos y sin intenciones torcidas, sin esperar a cambio recompensa ni protagonismo. 5. La Iglesia, y nosotros pastores los primeros, estamos llamados a dar pasos concretos, a tener gestos bien marcados de apoyo y acompañamiento a todos, pero bien en particular a las personas que viven en situaciones límites y difíciles. Finalmente, quiero manifestar al Santo Padre la gratitud de la Iglesia cubana por su persona y por su entrega constante de cada día. Gracias por aquellos cinco días del mes de Enero de 1998, cuando pisó suelo cubano como "Mensaje de la verdad y la esperanza". Y aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a todas las Iglesias hermanas el apoyo que han brindado a la Iglesia que vive en Cuba.

L’Eglise particulière en Centrafrique se situe et évolue dans un pays pauvre, confronté à tant de problèmes: le SIDA (AIDS), le non respect des droits de l’homme, la pauvreté économique, l’analphabétisme, le taux élevé de mortalité, le tribalisme, les arriérés de salaires et les grèves fréquentes.

Mon discours comporte trois points principaux, inspirés de l’Instrumentum Laboris.

Le premier point concerne le titre même du document, qui parle de l’Evêque comme Serviteur de l’Evangile de Jésus-Christ pour l’espérance du monde. Par rapport à la situation qui est la nôtre, la première mission de l’Evêque est d’annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle de Jésus-Christ. Cela signifie prendre compte des situations concrètes des personnes et leur annoncer que Dieu les aime.

Le deuxième point vient du n° 141 de l’Instrumentum Laboris, qui parle de l’Evêque comme Père et défenseur des pauvres.

Les gens les plus vulnérables de la société doivent sentir l’efficacité de la Bonne Nouvelle. C’est ainsi que notre Conférence Episcopale a ciblé deux priorités: la santé et l’éducation. Cette action permet de chanter l’espérance chrétienne et de clamer la victoire pascale sue le mal.

Solidaires avec les pauvres, les petits, nous devons hurler d’indignation face aux mauvaises politiques commerciales pharmaceutiques. Joignons nos voix à celle des ONG, qui plaident pour un accès équitables aux médicaments.

Dans mon troisième point, je me réfère au n° 142 de l’Instrumentum Laboris. Face aux droits des petits, qui sont totalement ignorés chez nous, nous formons et informons. Nos stations radio catholiques soutiennent cette action.

L’Evangile est une force qui ne laisse aucune place à la fatalité - Dieu nous veut debout et libérés de toutes contraintes.

La misère qui étreint le peuple africain aujourd’hui nous oblige à retrouver la dimension subversive et transformatrice de l’Evangile.

La culture africaine se résume en une inlassable recherche de la vie. Cette vie à laquelle nous aspirons de toutes les fibres de notre être, le Christ nous l’apporte en abondance. Soyons, donc, les sentinelles de la vie.
