Nagasaki (Japan) was the venue, from 15th to 17th October 2002, for the continental gathering of bishops in charge of the Asian Bishops’ Conferences’ various Culture Committees. Cardinal Paul Poupard gave the opening talk. He focused on the theme of the gathering, Proclaiming Christ to Asian Cultures: Promise and Fulfilment, and asked three questions: What does it mean to proclaim Christ? What is Asia’s pluricultural and multi-religious context? What are the promise and fulfilment of which we speak?

 

L’incontro continentale dei Membri e Consultori asiatici del Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura e dei Vescovi presidenti delle Commissioni di Cultura delle Conferenze Episcopali d’Asia, tenutosi a Nagasaki, dal 15 al 17 ottobre 2002, è stato aperto dalla prolusione del Cardinale Paul Poupard. Il discorso, incentrato sul tema dell’Incontro, Proclamare Cristo alle culture asiatiche: promessa e realizzazione, è articolato in tre parti: cosa significa proclamare Cristo, qual è il contesto pluriculturale e multi-religioso dell’Asia e di quale promessa e realizzazione si parla.

 

El encuentro continental de Miembros y Consultores asiáticos del Consejo Pontificio de la Cultura y de los Obispos presidentes de las Comisiones de Cultura de las Conferencias Episcopales de Asia, celebrado en Nagasaki del 15 al 17 de obture de 2002, se abrió con la intervención del Cardinal Paul Poupard. El discurso, centrado en el tema del Encuentro, Proclamar a Cristo a las culturas asiáticas: promesa y realización, se estructura en tres partes: qué significa proclamar a Cristo, cuál es el contexto multicultural y multireligioso de Asia y cuáles son la promesa y la realización de que se habla.

La IIe Rencontre des Présidents des Conférences épiscopales du Sud-Est de l’Europe s’est tenue à Celje, en Slovénie, les 12 et 13 mars 2002. L’Archevêque de Ljubljana, Mgr Franc Rodé, ancien Secrétaire du Conseil Pontifical de la Culture, y a développé le thème: Dialogue entre les peuples et les cultures. Cette intervention est une brève, mais excellente présentation de l’histoire du Sud-Est de l’Europe et de la position du Saint-Siège sur la question nationale, si cruciale dans cette région.

 

The Second Meeting of South-Eastern European Bishops’ Conferences was held at Celje (Slovenia) on 12th and 13th March 2002. The former Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Archbishop Franc Rodé of Ljubljana, spoke on the theme of Dialogue between peoples and cultures. He gave a brief, but excellent presentation of the history of South-Eastern Europe and of the Holy See’s position on the question of nationality, which is a sensitive issue in this region.

 

Del 12 al 13 de marzo 2002, se celebró en Celje, Eslovenia, el Segundo Encuentro de los Presidentes de las Conferencias Episcopales del Sudeste Europeo. El Arzobispo de Ljubljana, Mons. Franc Rodé, antiguo Secretario del Consejo Pontificio de la Cultura, intervino con una relación titulada Diálogo entre pueblos y culturas. La intervención consiste en una presentación sintética pero ilustradora, de la historia del Sudeste europeo y de la posición de la Santa Sede ante la cuestión nacional, tan aguda en la región.

Au cours du Congrès marquant le 375ème anniversaire du Collège de l’Urbaniene, qui s’est tenu à l’Université Pontificale Urbanienne, du 27 au 29 novembre 2002, le Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Préfet de la Congrégation pour l’Évangélisation des peuples et Grand Chancelier de l’Université, est intervenu sur La culture au service du caractère missionnaire de l’Église. Le Cardinal s’interroge sur le rôle et le devoir de l’Université Urbanienne pour permettre à la culture d’être mise au service du caractère missionnaire de l’Eglise, tout juste entrée dans son troisième millénaire, en une époque dite de multi-culturalité.

 

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, gave the opening address at a Congress to mark the 375th anniversary of the Collegio Urbano, which was held from 27th to 29th November 2002 at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, where he is the Grand Chancellor. Speaking of Culture at the service of mission, the Cardinal asked what the Urbaniana University’s role and task might be in a culture at the service of mission in the Church today, as it begins its Third Millennium in what is said to be a “multi-cultural” age.

 

En el Congreso con motivo del 375° aniversario del Colegio Urbano, celebrado en la Pontificia Universidad Urbaniana, del 27 al 29 de noviembre de 2002, intervino el Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefecto de la Congregación para la Evangelización de los pueblos y Gran Canciller de la Universidad. En su conferencia, titulada La cultura al servicio de la misión, el purpurado se pregunta acerca del papel y la tarea de la Universidad Urbaniana para ofrecer una cultura al servicio de la misión en el momento presente, a comienzos del III Milenio, bajo el signo de la multiculturalidad.

 

 

SYMPOSIA

 

The continental gathering of Asian Members and Consultors of the Pontifical Council for Culture and Bishops in charge of the Asian Bishops’ Conferences’ various Culture Committees took place in Nagasaki (Japan) from 15th to 17th October 2002, on the theme Proclaiming Christ to Asian Cultures: Promise and Fulfilment. Those taking part stressed not only the extraordinary cultural diversity of Asia, and the situations in which the Church lives and works, but also the forms of dialogue that there are with the non-Christian majority.

 

Si è tenuto, a Nagasaki, dal 15 al 17 ottobre 2002, , L’incontro continentale dei Membri e Consultori asiatici del Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura e dei Vescovi presidenti delle Commissioni di Cultura delle Conferenze Episcopali d’Asia, sul tema: Proclamare Cristo alle culture asiatiche: promessa e realizzazione. I partecipanti hanno sottolineato non soltanto la straordinaria diversità culturale dell’Asia, e le situazioni nella quale la Chiesa vive e agisce, ma anche le forme di dialogo esistente con la maggioranza dei non cristiani.

 

Los participantes en el Encuentro de Nagasaki, Proclamar a Cristo a las Culturas Asiáticas: promesa y realización, celebrado del 15 al 17 de octubre de 2002, han subrayado la extraordinaria diversidad cultural de Asia y las situaciones en las que la Iglesia vive y actúa, así como también las formas de diálogo existentes con una mayoría que no es cristiana.

The Pontifical Council for Culture, in conjunction with Canon Karl Gervin of the Lutheran Cathedral in Oslo (Norway), and with support from the city’s Filmens Hus, organised an international meeting there from 7th to 10th November 2002 on The Church and film in dialogue. Catholic and Lutheran bishops, priests, pastors, religious and theologians met personalities from the Nordic film world, including producers, actors, directors, film critics and journalists, in a spirit of real friendship and mutual respect. The themes they discussed included: films and the Bible, loneliness and the temptation to commit suicide, reconciliation, society’s impact on marriage and the family, violence as a narrative device and commercial violence.

 

Il Pontificio Consiglio della Cultura, con la collaborazione del canonico luterano Karl Gervin di Oslo e con l’appoggio del Filmens Hus d’Oslo, ha organizzato un Incontro internazionale nella capitale norvegese, dal 7 al 10 novembre 2002, su La Chiesa e il film in dialogo. Vescovi cattolici e luterani, sacerdoti e pastori, religiose e teologi si sono incontrati con personalità del cinema nordico, produttori ed attori, cineasti, critici cinematografici e giornalisti, in un autentico spirito di amicizia e stima reciproca. Tra i temi affrontati: cinema e Bibbia, la solitudine e la tentazione al suicidio, la riconciliazione, la società e il suo impatto sulla coppia e sulla famiglia, la violenza come elemento narrativo e la violenza commerciale.

 

El Consejo Pontificio de la Cultura, con la colaboración del canónigo luterano Karl Gervin, de Oslo, y con el apoyo del Filmens Hus de esa ciudad, ha organizado un encuentro internacional en la capital noruega, del 7 al 10 de noviembre de 2002, sobre La Iglesia y el cine en diálogo. Obispos católicos y luteranos, sacerdotes y pastores, religiosas y teólogos se han encontrado con personalidades del cine nórdico: productores y actores, cineastas, críticos de cine y periodistas, en auténtico espíritu de amistad y recíproca estima. Entre los temas abordados: el cine y la Biblia, la soledad y la tentación del suicidio, la reconciliación, la sociedad y su impacto sobre la pareja y la familia, la violencia como elemento narrativo y la violencia comercial.

 

 

PONTIFICIAE ACADEMIAE

 

La VIIe Séance publique des Académies Pontificales s’est tenue, le 29 octobre 2002, dans la Cité du Vatican, sur le thème : Marie « aurore lumineuse et guide indéfectible » de la nouvelle évangélisation. C’est à l’Académie Pontificale de l’Immaculée et à l’Académie Pontificale Mariale Internationale qu’est revenue la préparation de deux communications sur le thème choisi. Pour la sixième fois, le Saint-Père a remis, en cours de séance, le Prix des Académies Pontificales. La lauréate de cette année est Rosa Calì, pour sa thèse de doctorat sur Les textes anti-mariologiques dans l’exégèse des Pères, de Nicée à Chalcédoine.

 

The 7th Public Assembly of the Pontifical Academies was held in the Vatican on 29th October 2002, on the theme Mary as the “bright dawn and sure guide” of new evangelisation. The Pontifical Academy of Our Lady Immaculate and the International Pontifical Marian Academy had the task of preparing two talks on this subject. In the course of the Assembly, the Holy Father awarded the Pontifical Academies Prize for the sixth time. This year it went to Dr. Rosa Cali for her doctoral thesis entitled Anti-Mariological texts in patristic exegesis from Nicea to Chalcedon.

 

Se ha celebrado el 29 de octubre de 2002 en la Ciudad del Vaticano la Séptima Sesión Pública de las Pontificias Academias, con el tema: María “aurora luminosa y guía segura” de la nueva evangelización. Correspondió a la Pontificia Academia de la Inmaculada y a la Pontificia Academia Mariana Internacional la preparación de sendas relaciones para ilustrar la temática. Durante la Sesión, el Santo Padre entregó por sexta vez el Premio de las Pontificias Academias, otorgado este año a la Dra. Rosa Calì por su tesis doctoral sobre Los textos anti-mariológicos en la exégesis de los Padres de Nicea a Calcedonia.
