Frair’s text

The fountain on the left, facing the Basilica, was built at the behest of Pope Clement X (1670-1676) who decided to complete the symmetrical arrangement of the square. The task was entrusted to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who faithfully replicated the fountain on the right. The fountain was inaugurated in 1689, the last year of the papacy of Innocent XI (1676-1689).
At the base of the fountain is the papal coat of arms of Clement X (1670-1676), four pairs of dolphins and a plaque commemorating the restoration carried out during the pontificate of Paul VI (1963-1978).
