The clock known as Oltremontano is placed over the southern corner of the facade of St. Peter’s basilica, and is identical to the one situated at the opposite end. It was erected between 1786 and 1790 in a project, initiated by the goldsmith Luigi Valadier and continued by his son Giuseppe.
The clock is formed by a circular dial of about 4 meters in diameter flanked by two angels in travertine that support the papal tiara with crossed keys. The dials are stucco. The dial is divided into 12 hours, the equivalent to our modern astronomical system and computes the time in 24 hours, from midnight to midnight.
In 1957, the manual winding mechanisms were replaced an electrically operated one.
