    The wind plaques were created in 1817, along with the sundial, by Vatican astronomer Mons. Filippo Luigi Gilj. Positioned in the pavement around the obelisk, there are sixteen discs marble depicting the cardinal point and the wind associated with it.


    Looking at the inscription on the discs a small linguistic inconsistency can be seen: on the basilica side, the term "west" is written in English, but on the opposite side the term "East" is written "Est", nowhere else are foreign terms found.
